In 1819 Blyth native William Smith, Captain of the Williams, was blown south buy a storm and accidently discovered the land we now call the South Shetland Islands which eventually led them to the discovery of the Antartic Peninsular. 200 years later the Williams II is a 105 year old Oak built gaffed riffed ketch. At 36m in length she is almost exactly the same dimensions as the Williams, built over 100 years earlier.
